When I hear the term Gulf of Mexico, Mayan Pyramids and temples immediately come to mind. In fact the Yucatan peninsula in the Gulf of Mexico is a magnet for people who want to explore the regions many archeological sites and experience Mexico's rich heritage. Many people from around the world who visit these ruins are in awe of these engineering marvels which were built without beast of burden or even the use of the wheel.
Chichen ItzaOne of the better known sites, Chichen Itza, is situated on the Yucatan state of present day Mexico. Chichen Itza was a major Mayan city which peaked between 600AD and 925AD. During this time, Chichen Itza's population was dictated by strong beliefs in their gods and astrology. Daily tours are available which take visitors to the ruins by bus. The tours last for most of the day which include travel time to and from the hotels. Tourist are allowed to explore the ruins including the ball court and temples surrounding the site. One of the most impressive structures of Chichen Itza is the Giant Pyramid Kukulcan or El Castillo the castle. Kukulcan was used for Human sacrifices and to this day, the steps leading to the top of the pyramid still have a reddish tone. The pyramid was also used as a calendar and is perfectly aligned with the stars.
TulumA smaller site located 80 miles south of Cancun is a temple ruin called Tulum. Tulum was mainly used for worship by the Mayan priests. Here at Tulum visitors can walk around the site which is beautifully preserved by Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History. The Tulum ruin is situated next to a 30+ foot cliff offering spectacular views of a pristine white sand beach and the turquoise Caribbean sea. Tours to this site are by bus to and from Cancun. The tours include a group tour guide, refreshments and lunch. Tours here last a few hours which includes travel time. Be prepared, temperatures in the area range from 85 to 95 degrees in humid weather. It's best to bring along a hat and UV protection.
